This page contains all tips to make GenoPro more enjoyable
and productive.
GenoPro supports Drag-and-Drop to open genealogy files. You can open a GEDCOM file
(.ged) by the simple action of a Drag-and-drop from Windows Explorer.
If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 (or later), you can view and edit a
genealogy tree (.gno file) directly within the browser.
You can create a family by selecting a male, a female, or both and clicking on the Family Wizard toolbar button.
You can add children to an existing marriage by selecting the marriage object and
clicking on the Family Wizard toolbar button.
You can add an additional marriage by re-selecting a male or female and clicking again
on the New Mate
toolbar button.
GenoPro understands relationships such as marriage, re-marriage, parent, child, adopted
child, step brother and step sister.
Use the toolbar buttons Select Mate, Select Parents, Select Children
and Select Siblings to verify the relationships among individuals
You may reduce the size of your document (.gno file) by half by saving under a different
filename. From the File menu, use the Save As command to save under a different
filename to create a backup on a floppy or put your genealogy tree on the Internet.
You can use the keyboard arrow keys to scroll the current view (window). To scroll
faster, use PageUp, PageDown, Ctrl+Left and Ctrl+Right.
You can simultaneously use the mouse, keyboard arrow keys and bookmarks to navigate
while doing any operation such as moving objects or creating links between objects.
You can always use the mouse wheel to zoom in and zoom out, even while selecting or
moving objects around.
You can always scroll a view by holding the ALT and move the mouse. This can be
handy if you are selecting/moving/linking objects and running out of display. Simply
hold the ALT key and move the mouse to scroll the window.
You can use the Home key to center the selected objects in the view (window). If
you can't find the selected object, simply use the Home key
You can use the Zoom Rectangle command to quickly change the zoom of a view.
- Use the Z short-cut key and follow the instructions on the status
bar.
- To zoom-in, use the mouse to outline a rectangle from top-left to
bottom-right.
- To zoom-out, use the mouse to outline a rectangle from bottom-right
to top-left.
You can clone selected objects by holding the CTRL key before moving the selected
objects. This is the fastest way to replace the Copy & Paste command.
Bookmarks are automatically persisted when you save your document (.gno file). A
bookmark can be useful to place a reference point to an individual or a family.
Bookmarks allow easy navigation from one location to another location in a
genealogy tree.
- To create a bookmark, use a key from Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+3.
- To use a bookmark, use a key from 1 to 3 respectively.
It is recommended to use the Re-Snap To Grid command after using the Inflate
Tree or Compress Tree commands.
- Inflating or compressing a tree (or a sub tree) produces unaligned
coordinates.
To prevent selected objects to snap to the imaginary grid, hold the SHIFT key while
moving the mouse. By default, objects are aligned to an imaginary grid of 10 units.
You can select non-adjacent objects by holding the SHIFT key before clicking onto the
object. When you hold the SHIFT key, you will notice the mouse cursor change shape.
You can use the % short-cut key to quickly change the zoom of a view (window) to
any value between 5% and 1000%. Similarly, you can use the + and - key to increase
and decrease the zoom.
You can have multiple views (windows) of the same document, each with a different zoom.
To achieve this, select the \"New Window\" command from the main menu to create
a new view (window) of the same document and change its zoom."
You can view the full-size of a picture by clicking with the mouse on that picture.
You can browse pictures by zooming a picture prior clicking on the Browse button.
- Click on an existing picture and click on the Browse button.
Each member and marriage object can hold thousands of pictures.
- For each picture, you can enter a description and the date when the
picture was taken.
You can type the URL of a picture to be downloaded. Any picture location starting with
http:// will be downloaded via your modem or any other Internet connection.
If you don't know an exact date, you can always enter a partial date such as 1947,
Mar-1965 or 15-Dec.
GenoPro is Y2K (Year 2000) compliant. GenoPro accepts dates ranging from year 0001 to
year 9999. Future releases will include dates ranging from 9999 BC to 9999 AD.
